Roos

Roos, where are you?

ROOS & INSPECTOR V
VIRTUAL REALITY EXPERIENCE

Roos:

“I’m actually not quite sure, but I think I already had it in Year 4, because when I covered my eyes with my hands, I used to see beautiful, firework-like things. I loved that, and I think those were absences, because when I started taking medication, it stopped unfortunately. They were round things, sometimes they looked more broccoli-like and they collided. Green would turn into yellow for example and more yellow would emerge, then something red-like. It was actually a beautiful display of colours that were like being born from each other.”

Endlessly zooming in on broccoli. That is what Roos saw when she used to cover her eyes when treats were handed out in primary school. Protuberances of green, which produced growths of purple. She would also see them when she seemed to fall at night. “What the fuck, I fell out of bed”, she used to think. Roos is 8 years old when she gets medication to treat her absences. “Then the colours stopped, and that was a pity, because I liked those.” Together with Roeland and Wouter from VR company Inspector V, Roos (now 12) will visit the Botanical Gardens in Amsterdam. In her pocket she will wear a 360-degree cinema camera, recording the walk.

In the garden she will be looking for broccoli and what it feels like to have an absence. Infallibly she knows how to find plants that match her experience. That one, no not that one. Yes, that, but I’d go through the holes and then through there.

Roeland suspects that Roos can see fractals and he explains to her what those are. The are mathematical formulas that have to do with the golden ratio. Roos can see how ferns are born from fractals, which are the building blocks to almost anything.

In the Inspector V studio, Roos is reconstructing her fractal experience into a VR experience. It appears to be the famous Mendelbrot fractal. Roos exactly knows its colours and the background is always black.

They look up the mathematical formula, because Roos shows a love for mathematics. She has recently started learning about math in the first year of secondary school. The formula is too hard for her, however.
